Need to take a moment to congratulate Fred McGriff on getting into the Hall of Fame. He’s kind of a marginal candidate really, but given that the Veterans Committee have let in ridiculous candidates such as Jack Morris and Harold Baines in recent years, by comparison McGriff is solid enough. According to Baseball Reference’s WAR stat, he only ranks as the 32nd best first baseman of all time, which is fine, except that he’s behind John Olerud who has never received one second of consideration, not to mention Will Clark and Keith Hernandez. But he does compare favorably to Orlando Cepeda and Gil Hodges. Slightly marginal is much better than ridiculous.

It’s also now quite clear that Bonds, Clemens, and Alex Rodriguez are never going to sniff the HOF, which is a shame given that at the very least Bonds and A-Rod are among the top 20 players to ever play. Probably not Schilling either, though we’ll see how that goes down the road. Maybe if he shuts up.
