The Beltway Media loves its Republican Daddies. It loves them so much. All it wants is for a strong male figure to tell them what to do without being actually fascist.

This brings us to Glenn Youngkin, the Patagonia-wearing fake moderate who came to power based on race-baiting around education and queer-baiting around bathrooms. There was never anything moderate about this clown, but if you were a moderate white in northern Virginia who read all the Post articles about how he was the kind of Republican Daddy we can all love, you might be convinced to give him a shot. Economically sensible!

One of the people in love with Youngkin was Karen Tumulty, the Post’s deputy editorial page editor. She has now written a mea culpa that should provide you with nothing but contempt for how our media elites find themselves in this place again and again when it comes to Republican Daddies.

I’d like to take this opportunity to retract the nice things I said about Glenn Youngkin a few months ago.

In July, I wrote a column when reports began to surface that Virginia’s Republican governor, a fresh and sunny political newcomer with proven bipartisan appeal, was already thinking about running for president.

At the time, I expressed hope that Youngkin — or someone like him — would seek the GOP nomination in 2024. His stunning 2021 victory in blue-ish Virginia showed that there might still be room in the Republican Party for a different model of politician, one who could run as a unifying alternative to Donald Trump’s venomous brand.

Optimist that I am, I still hope that a tribune of sanity will emerge in the Republican Party. But the everydad in the fleece vest probably isn’t that guy. When a situation this week called for expressing a modicum of human decency, Youngkin — who frequently talks about his religious values — showed he could rival the former president at diving for the gutter.

She then goes on to be horrified that Youngkin could laugh at the assassination attempt on Pelosi and note all the other things he’s actually done.

Will this stop her or the Post from wanting that next Republican Daddy after this one proved to be too mean? Ha ha ha, of course not. Have to be an optimist after all!
