Journalistic and legal work continues to piece together the details of January 6. Citizens for Responsibility and Ethics in Washington (CREW) has obtained recordings of radio communications among the US Park Police on January 6. The Park Police provide law enforcement for national parks and monuments. Their focus was on the Lincoln Memorial and Washington Monument. Like other law enforcement that day, they were quickly overwhelmed.

Some nuggets from the recordings:

  • By 9 am, police were unable to control the crowds at the Washington Monument.
  • They did not arrest people because they felt they couldn’t afford to lose the officers from crowd control.
  • At around 9:45, police were given orders not to interfere with a gathering crowd at the Lincoln Memorial. “Monitor only.”

Trump’s speech was at noon, and then of course the attack began on the Capitol.

Trump supporters were also massing (not “amassing”!) at The Ellipse. Would be useful to have a compilation of all the places they were staging.

Just Security compiles useful material on January 6. It’s an enormous story with much more to come.
