There has been a bloodbath in higher ed jobs
Since the pandemic started, a huge number of jobs in higher ed have been lost:

I will be interested to know how many of these were professional jobs with benefits (whether faculty or other staff) and how many were adjunct or other low-paid jobs, but given the magnitude of the losses it seems pretty clear that all of these areas were affected. Some of these jobs might come back assuming higher-ed is mostly in person in the fall, but many of them won’t. (And the job market for recent PhDs in most fields is going to be incredibly ugly for a while.)
