Linfield University is being gutted.

The necessary corollary to Scott’s post about higher education jobs is that the bargaining power between faculty and administration is being tilted heavily towards the latter as faculty lose any confidence that they can successfully move to other jobs. At the same time, administration is looking at the numbers of incoming freshmen (including international students) and freaking out, resulting in paranoid and aggressive behavior. It’s a bad scene. For my part, I think that doctoral programs in many fields should consider a multi-year holiday in graduate student admissions, because minting new PhDs at this point is almost akin to professional malpractice.
