It’s All About Profit

There was this super disturbing poll that came out the other day showing that business is the most trusted institution in America and that people are looking to business leaders to take strong stands against racism and transphobia and other forms of injustice. And you know, that’s really a sign of the decline of other institutions that will actually do something about this, or could anyway. Trust in government has collapsed in recent decades. So has union membership, church membership, joining clubs, any other form of social organization. Business has filled the gap. And as a side product of its propaganda about business being smarter than everyone else, job creators, leaders of society, etc., people now actually look to business to lead us on social justice.
Well, that just ain’t going to work. But Marketplace wanted to speak to me about the poll and I was happy to do so in order that I could cut the crap and get to the sole reason why business exists:
“Corporations and business exist for one single reason, and that’s profit,” said historian Erik Loomis at the University of Rhode Island. “So unless it’s in their profit interest to attack racism, to attack transphobia, to take leadership on vaccines, they’re not going to want to do that.”
I’ll say this–they picked up on the best quote in the interview.
