Can we just take a some time to reflect on how remarkable Warnock’s win is?

Warnock’s victory is one for the books: He will be the first Black senator from Georgia, and the second Black senator elected to represent the South since Reconstruction. Warnock declared victory in live-streamed remarks, saying: “I am so honored by the faith that you have shown in me, and I promise you this: I am going to the Senate to work for Georgia, all of Georgia, no matter who you cast your vote for in this election.” (Loeffler also spoke to supporters but did not concede.) I profiled the pastor from Atlanta’s historic Ebenezer Baptist Church back in October, exploring how faith informs his politics.

It’s sobering to realize that the Dems having any chance of getting Senate majorities is going to require lucking into some superlative political talents. Joe Manchin is going to be frustrating as hell over the next 2 years, but nonetheless we wouldn’t be here if he didn’t manage to somehow win re-election in a state Trump carried by 42 points, in a cycle in which multiple Dem incumbents in more theoretically winnable red and purple states got wiped out. It seems pretty clear that Warnock has Got It, which is particularly important since he’s up again in 2022 (while Ossoff will have 6 more years of demographic change to help his chances.)
