I may have linked to this before, back in the days before I created Film Club, but since we started the day with Samuel Slater, I figured we’d end it with the wages of textile production. 1912’s The Crime of Carelessness is the loathsome, morally repugnant response to the Triangle Fire from the National Association of Manufacturers. It’s thesis: Both Sides Do It so let’s not blame the employer just because 146 workers died in that fire. After all, some careless worker was probably being careless and smoking and I mean, sure the factory is ridiculously dangerous and the doors are locked, but who can really be blamed? Disgusting.
