100,298,838 to be exact. This number will rise as final reports come in; furthermore several million more mail-in ballots will be either mailed or dropped off today. The latter are not early votes, but they too exemplify the trend toward non-traditional voting.

It seems likely that non-traditional voting — casting one’s vote by doing something other than going to a polling place on election day — will end up equalling around 80% of the total 2016 turnout, and perhaps 70% of this year’s.

One silver lining to this smoking crater of a year (I’m mixing my metaphors faster than a Friedman typing on a tablet in the back of a cab) is that a much larger number of Americans are no longer going to be OK with the idea that it’s somehow OK to require a certain very non-random subset of voters to wait for hours in line on a work day just to exercise their most basic constitutional right.
