After United Fruit and the Dulles Brothers overthrew the democratically elected government of Jacobo Arbenz in Guatemala, the company came under a lot of criticism. After all, the fruit companies had only dominated Central America for a half-century, engaging in violence, war, coups, and anything else to dominate the region while forcing workers into horrible conditions. So what else to do in order to deflect this criticism but blaming the communists? That is the point of this late 50s film Why the Kremlin Hates Bananas, which basically makes the argument that because UFCO sponsored some agricultural school in Honduras, the Soviets want to destroy the company. It is…not compelling.

Bonus Nixon sighting!
