The National Interest asked me to briefly write up one of the more compelling trivia questions associated with World War I:

How many British dreadnoughts did German submarines sink in World War I? None. How many German submarines did Dreadnought sink? One.

Before researching the incident, I did not know that the skipper of U-29 (the submarine Dreadnought sank) was the commander of the boat that sank the cruisers Aboukir, Hogue, and Cressy. He also sank another cruiser (HMS Hawke) before his fateful attempt to torpedo the battleship HMS Neptune…
