I think there’s lots to find puke-inducing about the “do what you love” mantra. For starters, it’s probably been emblazoned on a pillow, which automatically makes it an incredibly obnoxious sentiment. The linked article touches on how it ignores the 95% of percent of the workforce–the people who serve food or paint nails or do sanitation work. But its focus is on how it devalues work, period. Yes, I suppose it does. But it’s the idea that people can just–willy nilly…if they bootstrap it enough– “do what they love” that is most offensive to me. That is 100% Grade A horse shit. Most people can’t. Most people don’t. Most people are toiling at work they don’t particularly like, let alone love. So, yeah, it’s just an incredibly obnoxious concept, full-stop.
