See Loomis on Lucinda Williams.  I saw Williams a couple years ago in Louisville, on the West tour.  It was probably the worst show I’ve ever paid to see.  I wasn’t even able to really grapple with how bad it was until I was driving home. I seem to recall saying “pretty good” when somebody asked me what I had thought.  It wasn’t, though; on the long drive back to Lexington, I tried to listen to West again and determined that I just… couldn’t… enjoy… any of the songs.  Every song I heard just reinforced in my mind how bad the live performances had been.  I still can’t listen to the album, which I had originally found to be on the plus side of mediocre.

Anyone ever have an experience like that?  I should say that, contra Loomis, Alejandro Escovedo has impressed every time I’ve seen him.  But then, I don’t think his last few albums have really been all that bad.
