I am spending the next six weeks in Argentina and Chile, theoretically learning Spanish, more likely sounding like an asshole to my teachers and fellow students. Prepare accordingly for posts about the region. What is this “World Cup” I keep hearing about? Argentina is…good at something? I mean, other than managing its economy of course. Chile doesn’t have chili as its national dish? Or Hatch green chile for that matter? I am so confused.

Speaking of the World Cup, it’s going to be super fun to be in Buenos Aires for their first game against Algeria on Tuesday. I’ve never been in a good soccer (or “football” as they say in countries that don’t have Donald Trump as president) country during the World Cup before, so that should be a blast, like Maradona on a cocaine binge. Chile didn’t make it, but I assume I will learn a lot about which countries Chileans hate while I am there through watching these games with them, which I assume starts with Argentina. But then every other country in Latin America hates Argentines.

Anyway, have at it. Since I have no rooting interest in this except for rooting for the U.S. to lose, I guess I will go with Mexico and South Korea, as the two nations I’ve spent the most time in outside the U.S. Even if it’s been 30 years since I was in Korea.

One more thing I love about the World Cup. It’s a global sport, which means lots of liberals who like to use the term “sportsball” to discuss American football and the like get really into soccer in order to show their globalist bonafides, which means rooting for a sport whose corruption makes the NCAA look like a local charity organization and with fans so racist that they routinely make ape sounds at African players. Sounds pretty liberal to me!
