How To Respond?

I went to the doctor today and after he finished explaining his moral repugnance at Bush and the war (which he opposed from the start), he said to me, “I’m a Republican — not because I agree with them, but for the tax cuts.” My response was that he should balance it against his investments. The market is always better under the Democrats so on the balance he probably makes out better overall. It got a shoulder shrug from someone who is really a very smart man. The moral appeals were acknowledged to be ineffective, so I tried the self-interest route. How else could one respond in such a situation, even if wearing pants?
