GOP suppression of poor voting becomes slightly more brazen.

I’m part of the crazy paranoid left who think Republicans don’t want poor people and minorities to vote, and they’re often willing to exercise some portion of their considerable power to make it more difficult and therefore happen less frequently. (To be fair, I’m sure they wouldn’t do this if those people would just vote for them). But even I wasn’t prepared for this–via BitchPhD we learn of a provision added to a low income housing bill in the house that would “disqualify non-profits from applying for that money if they’ve engaged in any voter participation activities in the previous year–including non-partisan registering of voters.” Wow. I should really stopped being surprised by stuff like this, but I’ll admit, it’s still my first reaction. Maybe by 2008 my cynicism will catch up with their depravity.

I think I know why this provision was added, but how could they defend this with a straight face?
