Self-inflicted brain damage on a Sunday night
Scott’s got an excellent suggestion for a serious blogging topic for me below, so what do I do? In a moment of temporary insanity and inexplicable self-abuse, I follow a link to NRO’s The Corner.
So what’s the wacky Corner crew up to? First, Jonah Goldberg makes an astute observation: the Sunday talk shows seem to tilt rather heavily away from the Democratic side of the aisle. This causes Jonah rethink the whole “liberal media bias” notion and… wait, no it doesn’t! William of Occam is spinning in his grave:
Is it that it’s unseemly to have Democrats shown-up for their lack of democratic idealism?
Curse that Liberal Media Bias! The fiendish villains of the “MSM” are protecting the Democrats by not giving them an opportunity to make fools of themselves by disagreeing with Bush approved policy and spin.
A few hours later, Cliff May reflects further on the issue, and engages in the most extraordinary act of projection I’ve seen in many a moon:
More disturbingly, as you suggest, this match-up avoided the bigger story: the fact that so many liberals have adopted a Buchananite perspective, the fact that so many liberals have become post-democratic (they no longer believe in Kennedy’s vision of Americans “bearing any burden” to spread freedom and democracy), as well as post-humanitarian (they have little or no concern about Muslim-on-Muslim crimes, e.g. mass murders, torture and rape).
Suggesting that someone be held accountable for Abu Ghraib? You may be post-humanitarian! Worried about our future AG’s cavalier attitude toward the rule of law? You may be post-democratic!
So anyway, some troublesome character recalled the library copy of Mackie’s Democracy Defended, so that review will have to wait. In the meantime, I swear on my Grandmother’s tallest stack of bibles I’m not going to read any wingnut propaganda for at least two weeks. Long enough for all the residual mental sludge from this last visit to flush out of my system.
