It’s been a tough battle, with too many entries to count. But I can finally award the prize for the silliest, most poorly substantiated, and phoned-in recitation of the “Democrats hate ordinary people” script toLawrence Kaplan. Admittedly, this may seem unfair, since Kaplan actually tries to cite examples, a true innovation in the genre. Alas, the examples don’t remotely prove his point. For example:

The ever-reliable New York Times columnist Paul Krugman opined that “Democrats are not going to get the support of people whose votes are motivated, above all, by their opposition to abortion and gay rights (and, in the background, minority rights).”

Yes, completely accurate, non-inflammatory comments about people with certain political beliefs who could live anywhere written by op-ed columnists–that’s all the evidence I need that Democratic politicians hate everybody who doesn’t live on the coasts.

Of all the genres of election post-mortems, this is far and away the stupidest. Please make it go away.
