Brooks and El Salvador, or Victory is Ours!
By When Cheney mentioned El Salvador in the Vice Presidential debate last week, I was briefly reminded of something I had seen a couple of days before. Couldn’t put my finger on it, but Erik at Alterdestinycaught it; David Brooks had written a column extolling the American role in bringing democracy to El Salvador just a couple of days before. Regrettably, the Brooks column is now in the NYT archive, and I’ll eat hemlock before I pay a dime for something David Brooks wrote. Erik lays out some of the implications of this coincidence:
1. David Brooks is a whore for the Republican Party.
2. The Republicans actually got this from Brooks.
Well, we know the first one is true. The second opens more intriguing possibilities; is Cheney desperate enough for material that he’s willing to lean on Brooks, or does he actually think that Brooks has insight into politics?
Either way, we win. When the other side listens to Brooksie, it’s time to start getting the champagne ready.
