For Dennis Rodman

In honor of Dennis Rodman’s trip to North Korea, I thought a North Korean propaganda cartoon was in order.

There’s no subtitles, but like you really need them

Among the many problems with this cartoon is that no one under the age of 30 in North Korea has ever seen an actual tree.

Wowzers. That’s… that’s great. I really wish my math classes had shown us films about using protractors and pencils to fight Saddam.

Also, is deforestation a big issue in North Korea? I guess I picture a wooded wasteland devoid of food rather than an endless arid expanse of pencil rocket launchers.

How long will it be before N. Korea is able to deliver a Ticonderoga #2 to America’s West Coast?

Vice said the Americans hoped to engage in a little “basketball diplomacy” in North Korea by running a sports camp for children and playing games with local people – and by competing alongside North Korea’s top athletes in an exhibition match they hope will be attended by the leader, Kim Jong-un.

Oh, I know how this one ends: Kim Jong-un Messes Around And Gets A Triple Double.

Great. Next think you know Congress will demand an APM system and another 50 billion will go to the newly formed PDA (and, of course, Lockheed Martin).

      • Jewish Steel

I think some kind of very fast and efficient sharpener might do the trick.

I think the chollima-based triumphs of 1966 would be a good way to connect, but while soccer is getting better known to the sporting public, conventional wisdom goes for hoops

      • Atticus Dogsbody

        Who’s conventional wisdom?

        • Jewish Steel

A small forward, I think. Played for DePaul.

            One of John Minor Wisdom’s great grandkids, I believe . . .

Andre “Conventional” Wisdom plays defense for Liverpool FC

              • Bill Murray

but obviously is a big hoops fan

At around 5:36, it sounds like they’re saying “hwaiting”

  • Data Tutashkhia

More realistic than Red Dawn, anyway. Wolverines!

Clearly we will fall behind the Axis of Evil in the STEM disciplines if we do not intensify our commitment to high-stakes testing!

That’s an awfully roundabout way to show kids how to use a protractor. On the other hand, I liked that the Imperialist Yankee shells and missiles all looked like Jimmy Durante.

    • Hogan

And the landing craft all look like the Monitor.

  • cpinva

    possibly true.

“Among the many problems with this cartoon is that no one under the age of 30 in North Korea has ever seen an actual tree.”

more to the point, i doubt anyone under the age of 40 in north korea has seen a rabbit (or any other wildlife) in the wild. interesting way to learn how to use a compass & protractor though.

    • Incontinentia Buttocks

Actually, like a lot of areas that have experienced forced human dehabitation, Korea’s DMZ is crawling with wildlife, so any NKPA troops stationed on the border have probably seen plenty of critters through their ever-vigilant Juche binoculars.

      • Randy

Rabbits in the DMZ. That’s an image that cries out for Chuck Jones.

      • cpinva

you have a point there. i was thinking more in terms of the rest of n. korea, populated by a starving citizenry, that’s probably eaten anything that looks remotely organic, years ago.

and yeah, where’s chuck jones, when you really need him?

God that was terrible. They can’t even do a decent job on propaganda? It looked & sounded like somebody dubbing modern lyrics on top of Steamboat Willie.
