Wanker of the Day
Seriously, he’s really reached a remarkable pinnacle of achievement. Being clearly the worst commissioner of a North American professional sport is like being the most irritating Train song.

It’s pretty hard to make an idiot like Bowie Kuhn look at least semi-competent, but Bettman’s doing a fine, fine, job.
I really don’t care.
I haven’t watched a single hockey game since their last strike.
And I grew-up a rabid Rangers fan. I also grew-up a rabid Knick fan.
“Little Big Shorty” Jimmy Dolan has cured me of both. I don’t watch either anymore.
I now have a lot more spare time in the Fall, Winter, and Spring that I can enjoy, not watching incompetence that rivals W and the rest of his administration of war criminals and crooks.
lock-out not strike. there is a difference
I’m a die hard Kings fan, and read Rich’s blog pretty much every day. What’s interesting here is the model that the Kings used for the last few years. Hammond covered the Kings for the Daily News in essentially the same format he used with the Kings. When the Kings hired him, he became a journalist fully employed by the team who still maintained his objectivity and credibility with the fans. Rich’s blog was a fantastic source of information. He had a really good rapport with Dean Lombardi, and was able to share a lot of interesting information. It’s sad to see him go.
I don’t know if any other teams have tried using this approach, and I’m not sure it would work anywhere else, but it really worked for the majority of Kings fans. It should be noted that Rich was and is a real reporter, and not an opinion columnist. He wasn’t a bomb thrower by any means. But in this day and age, when you want just good solid news about your team as soon as it happens, Rich was really good at what he did.
Gary Bettman is horrible commissioner, but it should be pointed out that he works for a bunch of children who demand concessions from the union collectively while all working to undermine them individually. NHL owners are a bunch of assholes. The hammered the union last time around, got rewarded with seven years of record growth, and have decided that entitles them to another quart of blood. As a hockey fan, this is killing me, but on principle, I’d almost rather see the season lost again than see the players lose to these babies.
Lots of the reporters who work for mlb.com are great. Never heard any complaints about MLB interfering with their work.
The commissioners of the NHL, NFL, and NBA have spent the past several years making Bud Selig look like a paragon of managerial and public relations competence. Now that is an astounding achievement.
Out on Long Island, Chris Botta had been covering the Islanders offline and then online since the mid 90′s or so. He used to be PR for the team then went independent (but sponsored by the team), then went fully independent, and had press credentials for them.
Two years ago, he criticized their decision to fire the coach, so GM Garth Snow, pulled his credentials.
Bettman the clown is employed by clowns.
Steve Goldman of Baseball Prospectus fame wrote a column and blog for the YES network’s website that was often critical of the Yankees. Given that the YES network is an arm of the Yankees, it’s essentially the same thing.
Also makes one realize that Michael Kay is just a terrible homer and isn’t being pressured into saying only good things about the team.
What I want to know: Does the NHL’s contract with NBC include protections like the NFL’s with various networks, that the league gets paid even if TV games are lost? Because with Bettman’s and the league’s labor history, whoever signed/negotiated the deal with the network should be dismissed immediately, and thrown over the side with a lead parachute.
When the tumbrels on skates start sliding around collecting people, Bruins owner Jeremy Jacobs should be the first one on after Bettman. Right after Jacobs, those idiot owners who signed free agents for 9-10 years at stupid money, bitching all the while how they can’t compete.

I’ve always hoped I could have a lot of money and power and NOT become a dick. My hopes are being ground into dust by these dickless dicks.
Gary Bettman is one of the reasons rusty farm implements were invented. The man could fuck up bacon.
Now that Bettman has conquered North America, do you think he can catch Sepp Blatter as worst sports administrator in the world?
