Rape Exceptions Don’t Make Any Sense

This this came up in comments, but as I’ve said before it’s worth making it clear that rape exceptions to abortion laws don’t actually make any sense. Carmon and Marcotte are excellent on this, but rape exceptions are illogical and don’t provide any real protection to women. In criticizing the misogynist nonsense of people like Akin, we shouldn’t fall into the trap of implicitly agreeing that criminalizing abortion is more moderate if there are rape and incest exceptions. Forcing a woman to bear her rapist’s child is certainly appalling, but the implication correctly drawn from this is that abortion should be legal.
