ADL Needs to Return to Hebrew School

An organization whose stated role is to “counteract hatred, prejudice and bigotry” nonetheless opposes people building where they please simply because of the faith they adhere to. Sure “bigotry is unfair and wrong”, the ADL says, but we should give the bigots what they want anyway. It is inconceivable that the ADL would argue such a position if the building in question happened to be a synagogue, and the builders happened to be Jews.
Let’s be clear. This is not about the proposed Islamic Center. There is already a masjid in the neighborhood, and it’s been there for decades. This is about giving political cover to right-wing politicians using anti-Muslim bigotry as a political weapon and a fundraising tool. By doing this the ADL is increasingly eroding its already weakened credibility as a non-partisan organization.
I learned one very important lesson in Hebrew School that I have retained my entire life. If they can deny freedom to a single individual because of who they are, they can do it to anyone. Someone at the ADL needs to go back to Hebrew School.

It was never a secret that there was a significant Orthodox Jewish presence in the protests against the mosque. (Most of the posters pushing the protest a few weeks ago included contact information for such groups.)
So it should be no surprise that the ADL came out in favor of preventing the mosque: Abe Foxman is 3,000 miles away, and knows how to arouse the faithful (think sober Pam Gellars).
But it’s still pathetic and embarassing, all the moreso because it gives the Muslims another reason to hate “the Jews.”
The ADL has nothing to do with judaism or an anti-bigotry agenda. The ADL, like FOX News, is now nothing more than a propaganda arm of the Republican party. Their only mission is to raise money from the rubes for the election of Republicans.
Sure can’t add anything to that. At one time the ADL was a good organization, but then it fell under the control of what I as Jew pleasantly refer to as dipshit pretend Jews. The organization has been worthless and repugnant for at least 10 or 15 years. Indeed, all the Jewish organizations that are not pure charities, like Haddasah, are totally worthless and maybe worse. And yes J-Street belongs on that list.
But wasn’t J-Street founded as a check on the ADL’s hackery?
Actually, J-Street was founded as a check on AIPAC‘s hackery. And while it’s not perfect, it’s still significantly better than AIPAC and is a fairly substantial step in the right direction.
The ADL used to be nonpartisan? When was that?

Sadly, once significant numbers of any group enter the elites, they become more concerned with preserving their own privilege than with the common good.
True enough as a general rule, but ADL at this point doesn’t really speak for the American Jewish community. It’s really just Abe Foxman, and it mainly serves the Republican fringe of US Jewry.
Didn’t the ADL spy on Anti-Apartheid activists for the South African government in the 1980s? If they ever were dedicated to opposing prejudice and discrimination in general, they gave that up a long time ago.
