Week 36

Jimmy Kimmel came back this week. Disney may have made this decision because they wanted a rate increase, but putting money above Donald Trump is okay. And now the rightwingers at Sinclair and Nexstar.

It has seemed to me that Trump has become more active since the furor started about the Epstein records. His five-day disappearance seems to have heightened his urgency. We’ve had a lot of things thrown at us this week. Now troops to Portland with a mandate for use of force. I’ve felt like I should write one of those war letters about the ragged refugees and survivors making their way down I-5. All that is, of course, nonsense. We’ll see what Governor Tina Kotek does.

As in the Kimmel thing, though, Trump keeps losing. That doesn’t slow him down and probably increases his activity level.

I am concerned about the meeting of generals Hegseth has called. Although there’s a fair chance that he will do no more than some pushups and demand that the audience follow, more sinister possibilities exist. Say, for example, an admiral refused to authorize a strike against a civilian boat about which nothing was known. At the meeting, that person might be sacked and humiliated. Or all might be required to swear a loyalty oath to Our President. If I were an attendee, I would want to be prepared for that, just in case.

I’m headed out in a bit, so this is a shorter weekly post than usual. I trust that commenters will add what I’ve missed and more. I am always pleased to see reports of people doing stuff to help others or to participate in other resistance activities. You are great!

I have several ideas for posts, but moving requires an awful lot of effort, and this week has been busy. The good news is that I’ve gotten a few more required tasks off the table, and some of the difficulties may be clearing. I’ve been able to do some exploring, and the geology around here is fascinating! I posted a question to Bluesky and got some good feedback. Check out the responses to this post.

I have a question for my geological friends! There is an enormous amount of petrified wood in the area around Creswell, Oregon. Also an amazing number of other distinctive rocks! The wood has a color and texture almost like sandstone. Here are a couple of pieces.— Cheryl Rofer (@cherylrofer.bsky.social) 2025-09-26T00:04:22.144Z

Follow the court-watchers for the details of the lawsuits.  Chris Geidner (LawDork, Bluesky), Roger Parloff (Lawfare, Bluesky), and the Just Security tracker.

As usual, keep it to things that have actually happened, not hypotheticals. What is actually happening is bad enough.

Caring for yourself and loved ones is resistance too. Post your pets.  The top photo is of Jose (white and gray) and Luca (orange tabby) listening to and perhaps looking at the owls who live in the adjacent trees, whooo have been very active in the mornings lately. I think the owls are great grays.

172 more weeks to go. What are you doing?
