EAIAC and BSDI as psychological defense mechanisms

Northwestern University law professor and co-founder of the Federalist Society Steven Calabresi illustrates perfectly something I’ve been meaning to write about, which is how critical the intersection of Every Accusation Is A Confession (EAIAC) and Both Sides Do It (BSDI) is to crypto-fascists who like Donald Trump’s tax cuts, but wish he would be more subtle about the whole authoritarian takeover of the US government.

Calabresi’s argument is yeah maybe the Trump administration is over-reaching here and there in terms of the whole following the law thing, but the Biden administration was just as bad or worse, so [step in argument missing].

His argument is:

(1) Trying to pass a statute that would expand the size of the SCOTUS is illegal, so really how can liberals complain that Trump is breaking the law by doing stuff like deporting citizens to a Salvadoran hellhole prison without legal process of any kind?

(2) Asking tech companies to take down anti-vax misinformation is exactly the same thing as threatening to yank CBS’s broadcast license for truthfully reporting that Donald Trump’s claims about the 2020 election are false.

(3) Federal vaccine mandates are legal only when there’s proof that a vaccine is safe, which isn’t true about the Covid vaccines, so the Biden administration’s vaccine mandates were a form of totalitarianism.

(4) Prosecuting Donald Trump for his crimes is the same thing as prosecuting Donald Trump’s political opponents for the crime of opposing him.

There’s some other stuff along the same lines but I think that’s enough for now.

If you think I’m mischaracterizing Calabresi’s argument because there’s no way that a prominent law professor who went to the best schools and btw is also Guido Calabresi’s nephew could possibly be making such preposterous claims, you’re free to get out of the boat and look for yourself.

The point here is that EAIAC and BSDI are categorical imperatives for right wing intellectuals in America at the moment, because the alternative is to recognize that you’ve dedicated your life to promoting something that’s unholy and evil, and that this must all end.
