I hope the LGM community has been spared:

For weeks, Sherry Dommer has been living a gastrointestinal nightmare.

Violent cramps. Exhaustion. Unrelenting nausea. Sprints to the toilet at all hours of the night.

Ms. Dommer, 49, has long considered herself a “go-go-go person,” but certainly not in this sense. The illness, which also struck her son, has felt like a pox on their house, its origins a mystery that has only unraveled in recent days.

The suspected culprit? A Crunchy Taco Supreme.

Ms. Dommer is one of thousands of people across the Midwest afflicted with extreme stomach distress that authorities have tied to a parasite lurking on shredded lettuce served on tacos, burritos and other Taco Bell creations.

The cyclospora parasite has wreaked havoc through intestines across broad swaths of the country, but has been especially rampant in Monroe County, Mich., which has reported one of the highest rates of infection in the nation.

Here, the debilitating — and at times embarrassing — malady has gripped the county, filled pharmacies, and diverted attention from local data center controversies and the impact of a recent bad storm. Today’s town chatter centers on the humbling concerns playing out in tile-floored household sanctuaries and public bathroom stalls.

The nasty symptoms have led to plenty of jokes, but the infection has resulted in serious consequences, including hundreds of hospitalizations.

“It feels like someone took a baseball bat to your abdomen,” said Nathan Gaynier, a Monroe County tooling engineer who had waves of symptoms over 10 days. A pregnant court reporter in a neighboring county told The New York Times she had spent six days in the hospital and feared for the life of her unborn child. Nicole Goodman, a 44-year-old nurse, said she had to wear a diaper to work — even after doctors had her on an antibiotic treatment.

“It was something I’ve never experienced or seen with my patients before,” Ms. Goodman said.

My wife’s best friend lived in Monroe County — home of Laz-Z-Boy! — for many years. Alas, the longer RFK Jr. is in charge the more universal experience this is likely to be.
