A lot of other things had to go wrong, of course, starting on the slaveholders who insisted on their stupid kludge electoral system in 1787. But Comey’s decision to violate department policy to make two major public pronouncements implying that Hillary Clinton was a crook even though 1)he conceded they she violated no laws and 2)the underlying issue is one nobody has considered important before or since was almost certainly a but-for condition for Trump winning, and that remains enough to convict him in any court of history.
