The future of remote work/WFH

A friend was venting about new work rules that require he spend X amount of time in the office:

Sure love commuting to work just to sit in Zooms all day in an empty building..

Forced quotas for “days in the office”, even if low, are so stupid. 95% of what I need to do I can do on Zoom from home. I am literally the only person sitting in a building with a pre-COVID capacity of 30-40.

This is a complex issue, that involves among other things the interests of the people who currently own the enormous amounts of leased office space that would be rendered largely obsolete by what would probably be more rational policies, socially speaking, about remote work.

Another factor is that managers have a built-in incentive, in terms of career survival, to believe/assume that the physical presence of their subordinates is crucial to various synergistic synergies and so forth.

But it’s complicated, because I’ve witnessed first hand the negative effects on a workplace that flow from nobody actually coming to work any more in person.

This thread is intended for a general discussion of the issues involved.
