These things still amaze me:
1. This moment is continually personalized to Trump when the domination of white patriarchal Omni-phobic anti-democratic pseudo-religious fascism over the nation has been the goal of mislabeled ‘Movement Conservatism’ from its inception 70 years ago. Trump is just the perfect hire for them because of his feral nature completely uninhibited by any sense of moral, ethical, legal, or patriotic responsibilities or common decency.
2. As a consequence of 1 the question isn’t really what to do about Trump but what to do about the mass hysteria among the electorate that brought us to this moment and sustains it. The general collapse of ethical media, no later than Whitewater, the accelerating economic inequities, combine with a current median voter who is as dumb as a box of rocks to deliver these truly moronic results.
3. The complete collapse of the Republican Party as an American institution into a treasonous cesspool of gangsterism. Russian money and influence have completely corrupted the party even in advance of the 2016 election with huge donations to the NRA, various meetings with Sessions and other Republicans, the Manafort infiltration, the Moscow Mitch coverup of their interference, etc. The obstruction of Moscow Mitch in January, 2020 to prevent real time consequences for Trump was a true Benedict Arnold moment.
4. To be clear, it has been 16 years of decent people expecting The Cult fever to break and instead their hateful stupidity and willful ignorance has intensified, their nihilism has expanded and accelerated.
5. This Thomas Friedman column is in fact 25 years too late. The tipping point was the 2000 election bringing the realization to the GQP that there were no significant constraints on their power. A presidential election stolen for a popular vote losing, unqualified, willfully ignorant failson of a former president and head of the secret intelligence service aided in the key state by his own brother went absolutely unquestioned, unchallenged by not only the political opposition but was aided and abetted by every institution of consequence.
The Omni-dimensional decay of the country to this point is what led to Trump rather than the inverse.
