Completely unqualified hack named by Trump to head BLS, immediately recommends no more monthly job reports

Just a little more sparkling authoritarianism for Sam Moyn et al, who still don’t like the F word:
The nomination is already drawing sharp pushback from economists. Jason Furman, a former chief economic adviser in the Obama White House, called Antoni “completely unqualified” and “an extreme partisan,” warning that his appointment would mark a break from decades of nonpartisan technocrats at the bureau.
Justin Wolfers, an economics professor at the University of Michigan, described Antoni as a “disastrously terrible” choice with “few credentials beyond a long history of misrepresenting or misunderstanding basic economic statistics.” Wolfers noted that Antoni has never done work involving the collection of data or labor markets or published peer-reviewed work. “This record would be insufficient to earn a job as a junior staffer at BLS,” Wolfers wrote on X.
This is why we had to get rid of DEI.
OK this sounds really not great, but it’s not like he’ll just order the BLS to stop issuing monthly job figures:
President Trump’s nominee to lead the Bureau of Labor Statistics is suggesting that the agency suspend its monthly jobs report, an economic staple that is relied upon by the Federal Reserve and U.S. businesses to gauge the health of the economy.
In an interview on Fox Business on Monday ahead of his nomination, E.J. Antoni criticized the monthly employment report as flawed and suggested it be replaced with “more accurate, though less timely, quarterly data.”
This is all way worse than the first time around when he didn’t think he would win, and lots of old style country club GOP money men rallied round the banner of The Business of America is Business, and managed to secure positions near the faux gold throne. This time it’s nothing but lunatics and grifters, and grifting lunatics.
And of course Trump himself has achieved escape velocity from reality, when he was just still accelerating toward it back in 2015, when the whole idea that he could be elected president was obviously not worth taking seriously.
