Crushing American exports
As rough as things are for the bourbon industry, the situation with wine exports is even more dire:
The wine industry is even more vulnerable. There’s not really an equivalent to good American bourbon you can get if it’s taken off the shelves (although many people will be happy to switch to alternatives), but while there’s a lot of excellent American wine there’s nothing that can’t be replaced by Europe, South America, and/or Australia/New Zealand.
Of broader significance is the data from Canada. Despite Trump’s impact on the election, I’m not sure it’s fully understood how repellent most Canadians found the 51st state talk, and how much it’s influencing consumer habits. It’s the kind of Trump action that is damaging to the country while purporting to stand up for its interests, with no upside. And it’s damage that’s not going to be easily repaired.
