The Colorado Rockies have lost 42 of their first 50 games, which is the worst 50-game start in major league history. It’s seven games worse than the 2024 White Sox and five games worse than the 1962 Mets.

Ah but what about the 1899 Cleveland Spiders, as so many LGM readers must be thinking, even though they don’t count as part of the “modern” record book, because of the weirdly arbitrary decision of the powers that be to declare modern MLB history started in 1900?

Glad you asked, as my friend Steve has Done His Own Research:

The Spiders went 9-41. Which was a hot streak for them as they were 11-93 after that. On August 25 they beat the Giants 4-2 to get to 19-94. After that they really dug deep for a 1-40 finish, 20-134 overall. God bless ’em, they met their contractual obligations. Showed up every single time.

Anyway, the Rockies sure do suck. The Phillies have surged into the NL East lead by sweeping the season series 7-0. Probably a bit of a false dawn as the Phillies core aside from Schwarber are showing their age. The Mets have their six Rockie games in the next couple of weeks so they could easily get it back. O/U is probably 5-1.

For awhile the Rockies were being outscored more than 2-1, which takes some doing. Probably unsustainable, and in fact despite continuing to lose all the time, their ratio has dipped below 2, at 323-164.

Colorado’s Pythagorean record is a nifty 11-39 so they’ve had a little bad luck. Just a little — like how it was bad luck that Mark Burnett eventually got Donald Trump elected president. Twice.

Anyhoo I haven’t checked but I wonder what the O/U for the Rockies’ eventual win total stands at at this moment? I would go with 39.
