Let’s Hear It For the Gerontocracy!

The Democrats and their love for the Olds has paid off big once again with the death of Gerry Connolly, who Pelosi and other senior Democrats went all-in to protect as head of Oversight Committee from Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, despite the fact that he had the cancer that has now killed him four months into the new Congress. Great job guys! Moreover, this is the third (!!!!!) old Democrat to die in office during this Congress!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! How many more seats will go vacant thanks to the olds refusing to accept the reality of biology.
This once again reminds me how utterly idiotic defenses of Biden running for reelection remain. It is literally astounding that this is still common in LGM comments. I have never seen a more indefensible political position in my life because it is nothing more than denial, mostly from other old people, of the reality of oncoming death and the incredible selfishness of this generation of old people. It’s absolute nonsense. The nation then saw Biden on the debate stage and collective horror hit anyone but the biggest hacks. And now of course he has an aggressive cancer that is entirely predictable for an 82 year old man.
Moreover, nearly all the remaining old Democrats are already talking about running again, starting with an 86 year old Maxine Waters. Dwight Evans is 70 and had a stroke last year. Is he running again? Oh you know it! John Larson had a seizure during a speech on the floor in February. He’s 76. Is he running again? He intends to! Notably the one who decided not to is Jan Schakowsky, who received all sorts of support from LGM commenters when Kat Abughazaleh announced she was primarying here. I have no opinion on whether the replacement should in fact be Abughazaleh, but I think it’s reasonably safe to say that at the very least, she declared open season on one old and others were ready to go too and now it’s going to be a competitive primary of people who don’t in fact remember the Eisenhower administration.
My question to people defending all the olds is this: What the hell is wrong with you?
Get rid of these people. My God. Let’s have a Democratic caucus made up of people who aren’t going to die, starting with the president and going all the way down to local officials. Just retire old people! You aren’t indispensable!! And that includes Bernie Sanders and Elizabeth Warren as much as it includes Gerry Connolly, Joe Biden, or anyone else who is less popular on the left.
