Please stay on topic in the comments. For those of you who need a little help, the topic is HHS Secretary Robert F Kennedy Jr.’s response to the ongoing measles outbreak.

That’s not a joke, even though his response has included touting “miraculous cures,” by a couple of cranks in Texas.

The health secretary, Robert F Kennedy Jr, said on a press tour that his response to a large measles outbreak in west Texas should be a “model for the world”.

This isn’t meant to be funny either, it’s just that The Guardian isn’t the NYT.

The statement came after Kennedy attended the funeral of a third measles victim over the weekend.

But given Secretary Sexting Scandal’s disdain for human life, maybe he does think more dead kids is a great idea.

“The numbers continue to grow by the day, but … the growth rate has diminished substantially,” Kennedy told reporters during a press conference, while promoting his health agenda through the American south-west.

Sounds familiar. Along with the bragging about how great he is at handling things.

The latest CDC data (updated yesterday) shows 800 cases, with the majority in Texas, where 36 new cases were reported between April 16 and April 18.

“I would compare it to what’s happening in Europe now,” Kennedy continued, according to Politico. “They’ve had 127,000 cases and 37 deaths. And so, what we’re doing right here in the United States is a model for the rest of the world.”

As I said earlier, Kennedy knows his fascist playbook and that includes invoking legitimate research and then lying about it.

Kennedy appeared to reference figures from the World Health Organization (WHO) released in March. In that instance, global health officials were referring to cases across 53 countries in Europe and central Asia, which make up the WHO’s “European region”. Included in that tally are nations such as Romania and Kazakhstan, which together account for nearly 60,000 cases.

The WHO report also covered 2024. But if I attempt math I get .70 deaths per country in 2024. The U.S. is up to three since January and I think partial blame can be placed at the feet of Kennedy, who would be begging parents to get their kids vaccinated. If he, you know, cared about kids.

The Guardian article ran April 9. Yesterday CBS had this article about Kennedy’s model response, which involves cancelling a plan to help curb the spread of measles in Texas’ schools.
