Trump flirts with pulling out of the debate again

The Character Candidate is suggesting he’ll skip yet another debate:

“Why would I do the Debate against Kamala Harris on that network?” Trump posted on social media Sunday night, complaining about an ABC News interview with Sen. Tom Cotton, R-Ark., and panel discussion earlier that day, saying the former was “biased” and the latter full of “Trump Haters.” The Republican nominee filled the rest of his post with tedious name calling — “Crooked,” “Marxist” — and attacks on the insufficiently fawning journalists of ABC.

“They’ve got a lot o questions to answer!!!” Trump posted just after 10 p.m. Eastern. “Why did Harris turn down Fox, NBC, CBS, and even CNN? Stay tuned!!!”

It’s possible that he means it, but it seems more likely that he’s trying to regain control of the news cycle that he’s used to. But there’s no reason to think it will actually work — he needs the debate more than she does at this point and Harris has made it clear she’s not going to agree to moving to another network. I also think it’s plausible that his initially wanting to duck the debate helped Harris get immediate traction, making this particularly unhelpful for him:

Above all else, this is just a tired old man who expected a presidential race that was a long cakewalk and remains unprepared for a close race as we approach September.

…I personally think that lying all the time about everything in a way that demonstrates an intention to engage in invidious discrimination is a sign of low character, but that’s not a view that’s going to get you editorial space to express:
