Why Barbie?

I was uninterested in dolls when I was a kid and offended by the idea of a propaganda doll to convince me I wanted to grow up to be a sex object. So I have mostly missed the popular culture around Barbie, although it is not possible to have lived in America for the past sixty years and not be aware of Barbie.

I have been baffled by the furor around the film, or even why one would be made. But, in preparation for this post, I watched the trailer. I think now I start to get it, although it’s laden with the cynicism that, like those high heels, I never wanted to grow into.

Why are you planning to go see “Barbie”? What does it mean to you?
