“The local economy was very dependent on my Ponzi scheme” would be a novel criminal defense. Hopefully.

This is the zillionth example of how the most straightforward thievery can suddenly turn into some sort of complex saga of good intentions gone tragically wrong when the thief is a sufficiently high status person.
