What is the highest rated beer in each state? This will give you that beer. Mostly, I think this is a pretty good list. Rhode Island is far from the greatest state for beer but Tilted Barn’s Chosen One IPA is quite excellent. Heady Topper is probably overrated because of its fame, but it’s not like it’s not an awesome beer and if you want to say it is Vermont’s best, well I’m not going to disagree with you. de Garde is an outstanding Oregon sour brewery and I’m glad to see them on top for my home state. Maine’s Dinner IPA is quite good and Tree House is wonderful even though every one of their IPAs is a slightly different New England hazy. In this case it’s the Julius that won out.

So I don’t have any real complaints here except to note the number of extremely high alcohol stouts that win in every state. I don’t mind the occasional gigantic pastry stout. I’m honestly not the biggest fan of barrel-aged stouts, but I appreciate the style. I just find it questionable that half the states’ best beers are 11% stouts. If anything, I think a lot of the pastry stouts especially end up being more or less the same.

Anyway, this is a good time for an open thread on beer. But if you are going to do the ol’ “IPAs are so terrible, why are they on every tap when no one I know likes them even though they are by far the most popular craft beer style” can you at least provide some evidence that they are on every tap? I start with Eugene’s Bier Stein as a challenge to this–plenty of IPAs, but lots of other beers too. Incidentally, the photo is from my visit to New England Brewing outside of New Haven today and that’s the Spin Cycle #40 IPA. As with most places, they have plenty of IPAs but also lots and lots of other options. So quit complaining.
