LGM Film Club, Part 248: Blessed Event
I recently watched Roy Del Ruth’s 1932 film Blessed Event, which is a largely silly but somewhat fun newspaper film about a young reporter (Lee Tracy) who makes his name publishing the worst trash imaginable, largely about unplanned pregnancies (thus the euphemism that makes up the film’s title). He also has a very deep hatred for the music of a popular jazz singer (Dick Powell) that makes him really want to get the guy. There’s some gangsters who don’t like the dirt, a young woman who Tracy screws over to make his name, all the pretty routine plot points you need for a movie like this. It’s fine if you want an old movie and don’t want to overthink anything.
