As we discussed earlier today, there has been an admirable amount of unity in applying sanctions against Russia in response to Putin’s imperialist war crimes. It will not surprise you to learn that the world’s most corrupt organization is an exception:
Soccer’s world governing body on Sunday levied penalties against Russia’s national soccer team but stopped short of suspending it ahead of crucial World Cup qualifying playoffs—even as Russia’s scheduled opponents insist that they will refuse to play as they protest Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.
FIFA said it would prevent any national-team games from taking place on Russian soil and forbid Russia from competing under its own flag or using the Russian national anthem. The team will be known as the “Football Union of Russia.”

Poland, which is due to face Russia in Moscow in a make-or-break playoff for a spot in the 2022 World Cup, has previously said it would not make the trip.
“No more words, time to act!” Polish soccer federation President Cezary Kulesza tweeted on Saturday. “Due to the escalation of the aggression of the Russian Federation towards Ukraine the Polish national team does not intend to play the playoff match against Russia.”
Polish President Andrzej Duda backed him up by replying on Twitter: “You don’t play with bandits!”
Sweden and the Czech Republic, which would face the winners of any Russia-Poland clash, have also said that they would boycott the game.
So, to summarize, Poland and the other countries scheduled to play Russia would be forced to take a forfeit loss, but Russia will not be allowed to play its national anthem. At the games that will not be played. Real compelling moral stand you’re taking there! Either make Russia forfeit the games or don’t even pretend that you’re doing anything.
