Thoughts:

(1) Everybody is moving to Florida. This does not bode well for the idea that Americans are on the verge of taking climate change seriously.

(2) Everything on this map points to increasing urbanization, and the associated emptying out of rural America. The rural Midwest and much of the Old Confederacy is turning into tumbleweed-strewn ghost towns.

(3) As the great urban centers continue to grow, how are people going to afford to buy houses anywhere near them? A couple of days ago marked the 26th anniversary of Jerry Garcia’s death. (Btw are we ever going to get a Grateful Dead post on this site? Erik has gestured at that a couple of times, but it looks as if I may have to do it, although I’m at best an extremely marginal Dead fan.). Somebody on another site linked to the Dead house in San Francisco, and I noticed it last sold in 1973 for $55,000 ($333,000 in 2021 dollars). Today a place like that is probably three million, without any reference to the added celebrity value.

(4) If you do happen to think climate change is real, lots of cheap soon-to-be prime real estate is available in northern Michigan.

Anyway, good news for progressives on the whole, although at this rate in another 20 years we’re going to have 70 senators representing about 173 old white people. Hey it’s a Republic Not a Democracy!
