The savvy response to this kind of thing is that of course he doesn’t believe it, it’s just part of an eleventydimensional scheme to A B and C, etc.
The truth is probably simpler: Donald Trump is a deranged old man who genuinely believes some completely crazy things.
He also happens to be the unchallenged leader of one of the nation’s two political parties. Of course the “respectable” [sic] sections of the right wing media are already interpreting all this as evidence that the Republican party is getting ready to “move on” from Trump:
Sure. Because the whole idea that someone like Trump could ever win the Republican party nomination, let alone get elected president, is just crazy talk.
