When I heard the news my first thought was for my mother, who will be 90 next year, and was exiled from the land of her birth at age 4 by Spanish fascism, because her father was almost murdered for the crime of being a liberal intellectual.
People driving by the park were honking horns and screaming, and my five year old asked why, and I told him because Trump won’t be president any more. He didn’t say anything then, but when we were driving home a little while later, he asked me to play song number 15 on CD number 6. I asked him why that song and he said “because Trump lost.” The song is the Ramones, “Do You Remember Rock and Roll Radio?”, which he often asks for when he’s really happy.
The last four years have been a nightmare from which we’re all trying to awake. Getting rid of the sociopath in the White House is just one step — although an enormous one — toward moving this country back toward sanity. Tonight I just want to say that for me personally the LGM community has played a big role in maintaining some semblance of sanity.
Both the other front pagers and most especially the commenters here have been invaluable sources of knowledge, analysis, and support in a very dark time.
Community is a much-abused word, but this place is a real community, in a world where such things are increasingly hard to find. Tonight is a night to celebrate that.
