My good friend Joe Sonka and the rest of the breaking news team at the Louisville Courier-Journal have won a Pulitzer for their coverage of Matt Bevin’s flurry of pardons in the final days of his governorship. At least part of the team that won the prize is currently on furlough because of the ongoing disaster. If you’re in Kentucky, support the Courier Journal or the Herald Leader; if not, support your own local newspaper.

It’s worth noting that the 5000 votes that separated Beshear from Bevin will probably save the lives of more than 5000 Kentuckians. Bevin, a wretched specimen of humanity who is in the process of being memory-holed by his own party, was precisely the kind of ideologue who would have let the pandemic burn across the Commonwealth with utter indifference. Beshear, by contrast, is currently the most popular governor in the country. Voting matters, folks.
