Bill Weld, everybody!

Q: Florida went to Trump; you guys exceeded the spread by a helluva lot down in Florida, a lot of people are already calling you “spoilers.” Is this the nightmare scenario that you were worried about kind of coming true in that sense?

A: No, you know, I came to think that it’s important enough for the country to have the Libertarians to have a third seat at the table in our ongoing national dialogue. So we didn’t pull our punches at all, and people vote the way they do, you know. It’s a big country, and I think that Gary has really exceeded what has been done before for the Libertarian Party, and I think in eight to twelve years the Libertarian Party could become the number-one party in the United States in terms of size—

Leaving aside the delusional nonsense about the Libertarian Party and their massively unpopular platform assembling anything remotely resembling a majority coalition…what is this “third seat at the table” of which you speak? Is it at a T.G.I. Friday’s? I’m sure it will be a major bulwark against Trump’s authoritarianism! Christ. And Weld is supposed to be the smart one on the ticket.

Let me be clear that I am not making a causal claim that Johnson (or Johnson + Stein) swung the election. The Libertarian vote cross-cuts cleavages, and the Green one seems to have been very small. Particularly since Trump’s EC margin is likely to be larger than George W. Bush’s, given the limitations of exit polling we will probably whether know whether Johnson’s campaign affected the election’s bottom-line outcome or not. The blame for this result — and we’ll be getting to all of them — has to start with the horrible anti-democratic anachronism that will put the second choice of the voters in the White House and the Roberts Court. But was pisses me off is the cavalier attitude of Weld and (especially) Stein, the fact they thought that this risk with no upside could possibly be worth taking.
