Penguins Rule Earth
Congratulations to Pittsburgh and its tastefully named owner.
As a coda, I strongly recommend Katie Baker’s piece about Joe Thornton and Phil Kessel. Kessel has also been a frequent and unfair victim of “shitty teams blame their best players for their failures” syndrome. Admittedly, the unlike with Thornton Bruins did at least get real value for him — two first rounders. (This being the Bruins and the Leafs being the Leafs, it made two excellent draft choices — Tyler Seguin and Dougie Hamilton — and then…traded them for pennies on the dollar. You’d think that the Thornton disaster might have informed the Bruins going forward, but nope — they still love these “I’ll trade you a dollar for 3 dimes” trades.) He was a media whipping boy in Toronto and got traded in what was essentially a salary dump. But put him with a very good team, and whaddya know he’s an excellent sniper and playmaker who was crucial to a Stanley Cup win. Good for him.
