The War On Women Is About Policy
Weigel is right about the silliness of the attempt of Republicans arguing that Weiner and Filner represent the real “war on women.” The obvious point:
Democrats, unsurprisingly, think this is hilarious. “No one has gotten questions and everyone is perfectly fine throwing all the d* bags under the bus,” says Matt Canter, the DSCC’s spokesman. “This whole things shows that Republicans have no idea what the hell the ‘war on women’ is all about—the voter. Protecting equal pay, birth control access, VAWA. It is about issues, not cable soap operas in New York City and San Diego.”
Filner should have already resigned (and possibly arrested); Weiner, whose behavior is not on the same level, won’t be mayor of New York and that’s fine with me. But nobody has ever argued that Democratic men will never do bad things. The crucial question of public officials is what kind of policies they will vote for in office
Whenever there’s an argument this obviously silly, Roger L. Simon will never be far behind:
Not only are these men sleazy hypocrites in their politics, they are deeply misogynistic in their behavior — and yet the soi-disant “progressive” crew of female politicians (Hillary Clinton, Kirsten Gillibrand, Nancy Pelosi, Barbara Boxer, Dianne Feinstein, Elizabeth Warren, et al.) are strangely silent.
Oh really? Well, I happen to have Nancy Pelosi right here, and:
House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) condemned actions by New York mayoral candidate Anthony Weiner and San Diego Mayor Bob Filner — both former Democratic colleagues in the House — and said they may be better off working to better themselves out of the limelight.
“If they’re clueless, get a clue,” she said Thursday at a press conference. “If they need therapy, do it in private.”
But why do Boxer and Feinstein insist on being silent?
And now California Sens. Dianne Feinstein and Barbara Boxer are piling on Filner, telling The Chronicle that he should start updating his resume.
Meanwhile, Roger L. Simon will continue to strongly support politicians who believe that women should be legally forced to carry pregnancies to term and should be prevented from bringing discrimination claims to court.
