The Week In Gross Incompetence

The only institution having a worse week than Harvard are major league umpires.  First, you had Angel Hernandez being unable to get a crucial call right despite having access to instant replay.  (At least Hernandez is a consistently outstanding umpire!)  But that’s nothing — yesterday, the umpires allowed the Astros to remove a pitcher before he had faced a batter. Even the best officials will occasionally miss judgment calls, and the Angel Hernandezes will miss many judgment calls, but not knowing basic rules is another matter.   Maybe tonight Porter can try just sending nobody but Altuve to the plate, using designated pinch runners if he gets on, like on a sandlot.
