In addition to his legacy as the leader of two good bands, he was a wonderful critic — I’ve found a lot of excellent music from his “Music, What Happened?” series, and in the ultimate test of criticism he rewards reading even when the music is familiar or when you disagree with the bottom-line judgement.
In a great tribute, the long out-of-print Game Theory albums have been made available on his website — start with Lolita Nation among the proper albums, although Tinker to Evans to Chance is a very useful overview. See also this Salon tribute.
