On Signaling

Not to let my frustration brim over too much, but what’s wrong with people that don’t use turn signals? Are there drivers ed programs out there teaching that there are situations when one doesn’t need to use a turning signal? Is “when the next car over is a Honda” one of these situations? I’m quite serious about this; signaling for me is a reflex. I do it when changing lanes on an empty road, and when turning right at an empty stop sign. It has become increasingly apparent to me, however, that this reflex is not shared by at least a substantial minority of the American driving public. I’m tempted to say that the otherwise fine drivers of Kentucky (only 913 highway fatalities last year!) have a particularly problematic relationship with the turn signal, but that perception may be based on the fact that I drive much more here than I did in Seattle.
